East Asian Joro Spiders Living In Northeast Georgia

Close up of Japanese yellow Joro spider in web. Smaller spider is caught in web.

Hi, I am Chris Williamson at (Skippy’s Lawncare Service). Has anyone noticed the number of spider webs that have taken over our lawns and homes? They are increasing more every year. This is due to the fact, that here in Northeast Georgia we have been invaded by an East Asian Trichophilia Clavate, also known as Joro Spiders

Two researchers at The Georgia Museum of Natural History at UGA and UNG collected specimens from nine separate locations in Georgia. The research found that east Asian Joro spiders are living in Braselton and Hoschinton Ga. in 2013. Again in 2015, Joro spiders were in Forseth county. It is theorized that the Joro Spiders arrived in Northeast Georgia via the many cargo freights that are located along I-85. It is believed the Joro Spiders could be all over the state of Georgia by the end of this year.

Joro spiders are venomous to their prey. They are not poisonous or aggressive to humans. Their webs are spawn high off the ground and are yellow in color. Their webs can catch a hummingbird and small bats. The lady Joro kills the male spider after mating. Joros are seminal to the writing spider and banana spiders. The Joro female is marked with yellow, blue, and red colors on her underside and blue bands around her legs. Many people have a fear of spiders in general. These spiders are not poisonous to humans.

I hope this blog has clarified the invasion of the many golden- orb web spiders that have taken over your yards and homes.
